Gang armed with AK 47 hits shopping centre
Police are searching for the suspects.
THE Telkom store in Shelly Centre was hit by armed robbers late last night.
Investigations have revealed that the robbers were armed with an AK 47 rifle and were in possession of a police radio.
The group of suspects entered the centre from the roof parking area and broke into the shop through the glass door.
“At this stage we are still investigating what exactly was taken from the store,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
Shortly after the break-in, police and the K9 unit responded to a call to be on the lookout for a suspicious vehicle travelling at high speed on the N2 freeway in a northerly direction.
“When police arrived at the Dududu off-ramp, they found a white VW Golf which had overturned. The occupants had fled,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
An AK 47 rifle, a police radio and house breaking implements were found in the vehicle, which was taken to a secure police premises for further investigation.
A search was conducted for the men, but yielded no results.
