UPDATE: Thief attacks employer with knife – twice
The robber attempted to steal R50 000

IT appears that the businessman had sent two of his employees to deposit the cash at the bank.
The teller discovered that there was a large sum missing and contacted the businessman who then went to the bank.
Upon viewing the CCTV footage, it was discovered that one of the men had removed money from the bag.
“The employer wanted to search the employee who then produced a knife and attempted to stab the employer. The second employee managed to overpower the suspect and disarm him,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
The attacker was taken to the staff kitchen where he managed to find a second knife, and attempted to stab his employer once again.
Scottburgh Mall security disarmed and searched the suspect, recovering the missing money.
“The Scottburgh SAPS responded and the 23-year-old suspect was arrested and detained. He is expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on charges of theft, assault and possession of a dangerous weapon,” said Captain Pandarum.
The case is being investigated by Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service.
ORIGINAL STORY:
AN Umzinto businessman’s employee decided to help himself to an early Christmas bonus at the Scottburgh Mall ABSA Bank, Wednesday, November 30.
The man accompanied his employer to the bank where the businessman was to deposit a large sum of cash.
Apparently while the businessman was discussing details of the deposit with a bank teller, his employee went to use the restroom.
Unbeknownst to the businessman, the employee had stolen a whopping R50 000 in cash and had gone to the bathroom to quickly stash the cash in his pants, shoes, socks and shirt.
When he returned, his boss was in quite a state as he had discovered that the cash was missing.
The businessman then allegedly accused ABSA staff of stealing the money.
Through a process of elimination it was established that the businessman’s employee had taken the cash.
When the employee was questioned, a scuffle ensued during which the man produced a knife and began stabbing the Umzinto businessman.
It is believed that a hostage situation followed. More information on this will be available shortly.
