Newsflash: Cop dies in armed robbery

The police officer was shot in the chest, stomach and thigh.

AN off-duty police officer stationed at Msinsini police station was killed and his colleague was lucky to escape unharmed when they came under attack in the Makhoso area, near Mtwalume yesterday.

The two off-duty policemen  were seated outside a house when they were accosted by three suspects armed with pistols.

“The suspects demanded the keys to the firearm safe before opening fire on them.

Constable Siyabonga Mbele (28) was shot in the chest, stomach and left thigh and died at the scene while the other officer was unharmed,” said police spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

The suspects fled with six cellphones, two state firearms, and an Opel Astra. The vehicle was recovered in Umlazi M-section last night.

Charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery are being investigated by Hibberdene SAPS.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to immediately contact the local police or our Crime Stop number on 08600 10111,” said Captain Gwala.
