Works starts on toll road
Temporary barriers have been put in place to prevent motorists from making illegal U-turns.
MOTORISTS are advised to proceed with caution when travelling on the toll road (R61) between Port Shepstone and the Shelly Beach/Izotsha ramps as temporary barriers are being placed along the road.
In an effort to prevent motorists from making illegal U-turns at the Shelly Beach/Izotsha off-ramp, where several accidents have occurred, barriers are being erected.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), which has a mandate to finance, improve, manage and maintain the country’s national road network, said the erection of temporary barriers will ensure that, during the 2016 Christmas holiday period, there will be some measure to prevent or limit the illegal crossings.
Salome Naicker, Sanral Eastern Region project manager, said a permanent wire rope barrier will be installed in the first half of 2017 following the resurfacing of the road.
“This matter has been given priority in the contractor’s programme due to the safety concerns. For SANRAL, the safety and well-being of road users and the communities in which it operates are paramount and we request motorists to obey the laws of our roads and not make illegal U-turns in this area.
“The patience and co-operation of motorists will be appreciated during this time,” she said.
Dr Rishigen Viranna MPL, the DA KZN spokesman, said they are happy that Sanral has kept to its word on temporary barriers being placed before the season begins. “Our DA Ward 3 councillor, Paul Brauteseth, will continue to monitor the construction process and time frames,” said Dr Viranna.
