UPDATE

THE five suspects  shot by police on the R61 toll road this morning have been positively linked to two cases –  a murder in Mpumalanga and a robbery in Mariannhill.

In addition to the firearms recovered this morning, police also recovered several cellphones and an undisclosed sum of cash.

The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Organised Crime Unit officers were following up information on a dangerous group of armed robbers that was travelling in a vehicle from the Eastern Cape towards Durban.

“The driver of the vehicle ignored warnings to stop instead the occupants opened fire on the officers,” said police spokesman, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

UNCONFIRMED reports indicate that a shoot-out on the R61 toll road near Shelly Beach last night has left five people dead.

According to the reports, the five, believed to have been a gang of armed robbers, were shot and killed by officers from the Durban Organised Crime unit.

Five firearms were apparently recovered, including an AK47 that was found in the suspects’ vehicle.

The Hawks are said to have received information about a vehicle carrying people suspected of being involved in cash in transit heists approaching from the Eastern Cape.

When the Hawks attempted to flag down the vehicle, the suspects apparently opened fire.

The Hawks returned fire, killing all five occupants in the car.

Official statements are awaited from the Hawks and the SAPS.
