Creston matrics soar
Creston has a proud history of producing exceptional matric results
AFTER months of hard work, sheer determination and many sacrifices by pupils there was huge relief as the Independent Examination Board’s (IEB) matric results were released.
The class of 2016 bears testament to this high level of commitment to quality education having once again achieved a one hundred percent matric pass rate. 92 percent of Creston’s candidates qualified for university entrance when compared to a national IEB average of 88 percent. Creston is very proud of the fact that on average, its candidates were able to achieve two subject distinctions each with the majority of the candidates achieving a minimum of 70 percent in their subjects.
Six of the 38 pupils achieved overall distinction aggregates. Creston grade averages were above 65 percent in 12 of the 16 subjects offered with grade averages for seven subjects above 70 percent. Grade averages in key subjects were as follows: English (67 percent), core mathematics (62 percent), physical sciences (66 percent), life sciences (67 percent), accounting (68 percent), geography (73 percent) and engineering, graphics and design (73 percent).
Top achiever and dux recipient Shirish Sewpersad who started at Creston College in grade four, bagged a full house of distinctions. He achieved distinctions in English (84 percent), Afrikaans first additional language (84 percent), core mathematics (92 percent), physical sciences (87 percent), life sciences (87 percent), accounting (95 percent) and life orientation (91 percent). He was placed in the top one percent in the country for accounting. Shirish has been accepted to study medicine as well as actuarial science at Wits University.
Head girl, Ashlea Heaver who started at Creston College in grade 00 also bagged a full house of distinctions. These distinctions were for English (80 percent), Afrikaans first additional language (83 percent), core mathematics (88 percent), physical sciences (87 percent), life sciences (87 percent), accounting (92 percent) and life orientation (91 percent). She was placed in the top one percent in the country for life orientation. Ashlea is keen on pursuing her dream of becoming a medical doctor and she has been accepted to study in this field at Wits University.
Christian Beyra-Martinez achieved distinctions in English, core mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, dramatic arts and life orientation. Christian, who is a talented actor, having played the lead role more than once in the major school drama productions, intends studying medicine as well. He has also been accepted to study in this field at Wits University and he hopes that one day he can follow in the footsteps of his dad, who is a surgeon.
Other top achievers included Nobuhle Mbili and Mariam Razak who each achieved five distinctions, Amber Lawlor (four distinctions) and Caitlin Morton, Nakita Madikizela, Ashlee Haverly and Preston Francis who each achieved three distinctions. The executive headmaster Noel Coetzee, deputy headmaster Dennis Thomas, director of studies Simon Pillay, staff and board of governors are truly proud of the class of 2016 and wish each and every pupil well in their future endeavours.
