Port Shepstone liquor store owner fined when patron dies after being stabbed by security guard

Police will conduct random visits to see if license owners are in compliance with the liquor laws.

LIQUOR store owners had better make sure they are legal in all respects – or they will face a visit from the police.

A owner of a well-known liquor establishment in the Port Shepstone CBD, paid a R1 000 fine recently after Warrant Officer Dries van Aarde, the designated liquor officer at Port Shepstone SAPS, served him a notice to appear in court.

The 37-year-old owner of the premises opted to pay up after a man was stabbed to death at his premises on the night of April 29.

“According to the Liquor Act 6 of 2010, owners of on-premises liquor consumption establishments must have certain security plans in place,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandr Wiid.

“This owner failed to uphold some of these prescriptions,  and as a result a security guard allegedly stabbed one of the patrons, who died,” she said.

She added that it is the responsibility of the owner to secure the safety of patrons at his premises.

The security guard was later arrested and has appeared in court on a charge of murder. The case has been postponed for further investigation.

She warned that SAPS officers will conduct random visits to see if license owners are in compliance with the liquor laws.
