Leisure Bay Conservancy Open Gardens: Learn to garden for the future

The Leisure Bay Conservancy open indigenous garden weekend will encourage wildlife-friendly practices.

ACTRESS Audrey Hepburn once said that to plant a garden was to believe in tomorrow.

Owners of four beautiful Leisure Bay gardens believe that gardening is even more of an act of faith in the future when it is done to create a haven for wildlife. All of them have wildlife-friendly, indigenous gardens that keep nature in their suburbs and help to preserve Leisure Bay’s flora and fauna for future generations.

To encourage other South Coast residents to approach the art of gardening in a more environmentally friendly manner, they are opening their gardens during the Leisure Bay Conservancy open garden weekend. They invite gardeners and nature lovers to visit them on June 16 and 17, from 10am to 4pm daily.

The gardeners are Stephanie and Piet Breedt, at 1311 Fisherman’s Drive; Libby and Mick Goodall at Plumbago, 546 St Ives Avenue; Mark Getliffe and Julian Bailey at 1668, Seaton Avenue; and Merle and Trevor Strachan at Kalimera, 1668 Seaton Avenue. There will be direction boards from the main road to all four gardens.

Tickets, which give visitors access to all four of the gardens, are R30 per person. They will be available at the entrances of the gardens on the days of the show. You can also buy them before show from selected outlets, the participating gardeners or from Leisure Bay Conservancy members.

For information about the open gardens and the availability of tickets, contact Libby at 082 5616993, Mark at 082 4282087, Stephanie at 083 3029382 or Merle at 083 4075219.
