Port Shepstone Secondary hosts trio of speech contests

Learners tested their language skills in English, Afrikaans and IsiZulu.

The entire language team at Port Shepstone Secondary was involved in preparing students for the annual speech contests in May.

English Home Language, Afrikaans FAL and IsiZulu FAL saw learners from Grades 8-12 participate in contests in the school’s conference room. Learners competed in two categories, namely the prepared speech and impromptu category.

At the isiZulu speech contest are (back, from left) first position winners Samkelo Mgingqilizana (Grade 12), Thandolwethu Zuke (Grade 11), Mpilo Mqadi (Grade 10), Konke Doyisa (Grade 9) and Zamahlubi Lushaba (Grade 8), with Lindelani Dlakude (co-ordinator/teacher), adjudicators Nonkululeko Nikwe and Zithobile Nkomo and Mandisa Mhlongo (co-ordinator/teacher) in front.

The dynamic participants were well supported by their peers and teachers alike; and they flourished as competitors as they sharpened their public speaking skills. Each participant showcased a high level of eloquence and their commanding presence filled the room to create a memorable and a rich experience for all present.

At the Afrikaans speech contest are (back, from left) Mohamed Suliman (Grade 10), Janessa Breunissen (Grade 9 ) and Yusuf Dindar (Grade 8), with first position winners Christyn Kodi (Grade 12), adjudicators Silna van Wyk and Gisela Venter, and Fathima Khamissa (Grade 11) in front.

The language team was supervised by the departmental head Melisha Bassdev-Mothilall and spearheaded by the dedicated English co-ordinators Tanaya Singh and Denise Reddiar, Afrikaans co-ordinators Joelene Reggie, Prenusha Chetty and Nonkululeko Shezi and the IsiZulu co-ordinators Mandisa Mhlongo and Lindelani Dlakude.

The school thanks the adjudicators for their time and valued expertise.
