Sheppie’s traffic congestion puts schoolchildren at risk

The road is absolute chaos; with the smaller children running in and out of the traffic, traffic jams, speeding cars, along with parents and taxis parking all over the place, reports a concerned reader.

Motorist Mairi Wallace of Tweni is deeply concerned about the traffic congestion on Dennis Shepstone Street and Mitchell Drive in Port Shepstone, especially when schoolchildren leave school to travel home in the afternoons.

“My biggest fear is that a child will be knocked down and killed along this stretch of road,” she said.

She stressed that something had to be done and if she had not reported this to the Herald, she would feel responsible if a child were knocked down.

Dennis Shepstone Street and Mitchell Drive become dangerously congested with traffic when school closes for home time.

Ms Wallace said she drops off her neighbour’s domestic along this road every Wednesday at 2pm, and the road is absolute chaos; with the smaller children running in and out of the traffic, traffic jams, speeding cars, along with parents and taxis parking all over the place.

“There are no traffic police helping to monitor and control the situation and the lollipop man at the pedestrian crossing on Dennis Shepstone doesn’t improve the situation,” she added. She stressed that the situation is very dangerous for children making their way home after school.

She called on the authorities, school heads and the community leaders to do something before a nasty accident occurs.

The Herald is awaiting a response from Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
