Wild Coast Sun Trust donates science kits to rural schools
Pupils would now have the opportunity to examine the internal framework of the body, such as the skeleton, heart and ear.
In an effort to close the gap between rural schools and urban schools, the Wild Coast Sun Mbizana Development Trust (WCS MDT) recently gave high schools within Mbizana local municipality area science kits.
Ten schools were given labs and kits valued at R600 000.
Board member, Mandlenkosi Memela, said this initiative was aimed at improving the situation pupils in rural schools were faced with, having to rely on drawings and what teachers wrote on boards.

Pupils would now have the opportunity to examine the internal framework of the body, such as the skeleton, heart and ear and learn about various chemicals, Mr Memela said.

He also urged the Department of Education to ensure the science kits were used, as opposed to being stored away until dust had settled on them.
“A joint monitoring oversight process will ensure these science kits are not kept in cupboards.”
Themba Kojane of the Eastern Cape Department of Education thanked the WCS MDT for its efforts and assured the trust that its efforts were not in vain.
“Your choice to invest in this kind of initiative is not lost. We will also have to train teachers to ensure they know how to properly use the equipment,” said Mr Kojane.

He further urged pupils to take advantage of this, as they expected to see future engineers, doctors and scientists resulting from the project.
Members of the trust also encouraged the department to focus on providing better learning opportunities that could help grow the physical science and maths pass rate in the province.

Other stakeholders present at the event included the Eastern Cape Gambling Board, MTN, Lasec Group, as well as Subz Panties and Pads.
MTN gave away school shoes to the pupils while Subz Panties and Pads gave away gift packs with sanitary towels and panties.
