Hibberdene Happenings: Lions mentor Sheppie High pupils
They acquitted themselves very well and were a credit to their school and to the community.
HIBBERDENE Lions mentored three Port Shepstone High pupils last week, with services ranging from helping at the library and at the Lions Club, to spending a day caring for animals at Rainbow Warriors and covering aspects of safety and traffic problems already present in the central business district. Neil Milne, Khaya Ngcobo and Phililinkosi Shozi, all in grade 10, acquitted themselves very well and were a credit to their school and to the community.

Sardines arrive
The recent sardine shoals bypassed Hibberdene, but chose to make landfall at several spots in the area on both Friday and Sunday last week. Scores of vehicles lined the side of the road on both days leading to frenzied excitement, especially amongst holidaymakers viewing the phenomenon for the first time. It certainly was a change from previous years’ sardine droughts.
Take a walk
The latest leg of the Ezemvelo-KZN Wildlife ‘Walking in Nature’ series of beach walks took place from Hibberdene to Umzumbe on Sunday, June 24. Covering a distance of 5.6km, the walk was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part, with an added bonus being the discovery of sardines at the finish line.
The next walk takes place on Sunday, July 8, when walkers will tackle the stretch from Umzumbe to Southport. Walks start at 7.30am sharp, though walkers are expected to be at the start from 6.45am onwards.
A fee of R20 is charged per walk, and breakfasts are on sale at R30 per person for which tickets can be bought before the walk. There are four lucky draws per walk, with the lucky draws being held at 7.25am.
Annual show
This weekend promises to be hectic with the 34th annual Lions’ Show taking place at the Port Shepstone Country Club grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from early till late. A jam-packed programme has been organised, with something for everyone – and enough live shows, entertainment and food lined up for all.
Grand fair
Then on Saturday (30th), the Reformed Church is having a grand fair at Cinder City Shellhole in Sea Park, to which everyone is invited. There will be plenty of stalls and entertainment galore, with sufficient food and liquid refreshments and everything else needed to make the day a memorable one. The fair will run from about 9am through to 3pm and all are most welcome.
Street party
A ‘Christmas in July’ street party takes place in Scottburgh from 9am to 3pm on Sunday, July 1, in the main street, Scott Street. There will be music, good food, a ‘Kiddies’ Corner’, face painting and an appearance by ‘Pat the Snake Man’. In fact, everything needed to make the day great. During the day, a collection of ‘winter warmth’ blankets, clothing and food will be handed over to ‘Joanne’s Angels’ – a very worthy organisation in Scottburgh, so roll up and support this worthy cause.

Head to Mtwalume
And don’t forget to attend the Mtwalume flea and craft market on Saturday, July 7, when similarly, a ‘winter warmth’ donation will be handed over to Pastor Johan Nel for needy people encountered during his ministry, by the organisers of the market. There will also be an abundance of food, crafts, jewellery and so forth available at this market, with the lovely, live music of Andy Els playing in the background. Please support all these charitable events.
Bring a friend
The Methodist men’s breakfast takes place on the same day, July 7, but there will be plenty of time to attend both the breakfast and then the flea market should you so wish. Contact Louis Nortje at 039 6992610 to reserve your place for the breakfast and please bring a friend along!
Three cheers
Judy and Norman Aiston celebrate their anniversary on June 28th, while birthday wishes for the week go to Amile Mchunu, Zibuyile Nzama, Debbie Lang, Cheryl Beck and Helen Chapman (27th), Lynn Borraidaile (29th), Scotch Beisheim (July 2) and Lenie van Rooy and Sylvia Rautenbach (July 3).
