In celebration of the annual marine phenomenon, the inaugural Umtamvuna Sardine Festival was held around Mattison Square, just north of Port Edward, with Mac Banana holding a Portuguese Food and Wine Tasting and Port Edward Holiday Resort the Sardine MTB Race and Trail Run last weekend.

Jani Heyneke mans her stall.

This awesome celebration was the start of a new tradition on the South Coast, as it was known as the Portuguese Mariners’ Carnival, in the past. It certainly attracted huge crowd participation.

Festival organiser, Mark Levine, said visitors enjoyed a wide range of activities and entertainment, including food and craft stalls, live music, nature reserves, running, walking and mountain biking trails, Zulu and Portuguese dancers, children’s games, a treasure hunt and much more.

Getting their faces painted are Adriaan Boshoff and Doné Pretorius.

“Lots of prizes were won, plus a Miss Umtamvuna pageant and a treasure hunt were huge hits! A fund-raiser for the SPCA and an auction for the Portuguese Monument also formed part of this year’s festival,” explained Mr Levine. This event delighted the senses with delicious food, great entertainment and fantastic company – it couldn’t get any better than that!
