Looking back on South Coast history: July 23 to 29
While new developments were being planned, one was now complete and another well under way.
It was decided that the trial of an Inkosi should be held away from his home.
July 23
1999
“The trial of Inkosi Calalakubo Khawula (73) and David Hlongwa (75) on charges of explosives, arms and ammunition possession will be heard in Durban.” It would be a year, almost to the day, before they would hear their fate.
July 24
1992
“Thousands of people will be retrenched and at least R40-million will be lost from agriculture alone on the South Coast this year if the drought continues.”
1998
While Margate Local Council set up a special Parking Project Team to investigate ways of resolving the town’s parking problems, the South Coast was abuzz with stories about an Izotsha farmer “having beaten up poachers trespassing on his property. And the alleged poachers are two policemen and a police administration clerk.”
“Police last week denied receiving information from the ANC prior to the 1995 Christmas Day massacre at Shobashobane.”
And Sheppie’s Heather Clark surfed her way into history by becoming the first South African woman ever to reach the finals of the Gunston 500.
July 25
1997
“A public meeting is to be called and consumers are to be asked to sign a petition to object to the 39 percent water tariff hike proposed by the Ugu Regional Council.”
Meanwhile, vandals broke into the Port Shepstone TLC offices. “A double cassette tape, radio clock and clock, and R600 belonging to one of the employees were stolen.”
Harbour plans popped up again. “Provincial support will be sought for the proposed R400-million marina development on the Mzimkhulu River.”

July 26
1991
“Fossils which are over 80 million years old have been found during excavations for the Wild Coast Sun’s R75-million extensions.”
July 28
1995
“A police roadblock near Port Edward on Tuesday morning netted 400kg of dagga and the arrest of six people.”
Foundations were being laid and construction was well under way for the new independent school in Oslo Beach.
2000
“Exciting developments planned for the Ugu Region were presented to potential overseas investors this week.”
And the “prestigious new office building, Beekman House in Port Shepstone, was officially opened last week.”
July 29
1994
“Rain water swept through the refugee camp near Margate cemetery on Monday night, soaking the occupants and their belongings.”
