Umtamvuna Views: Fond farewell to Viv Date

A lone figure could be seen hopping along the rocks from one side to the other, intent on reeling in his line.

VIV Date has sold her home in Southbroom and moved to Johannesburg to live with her daughter Pam.

She lived on the coast for 30 years, 25 of these on the farm on Maringo Flats, Port Edward with late husband Stan.

Viv worked for the Herald for eight years, three in the office and five as a scribe.

She enjoyed the game of golf and was the lady captain at Southbroom Golf Club for four years. She later joined the Southbroom Bowling Club and was on the committe.

Viv also served as a church warden at St Simon’s church in Trafalgar.

Her friendly nature and infectious laugh will be missed!

Taking a hike

Last Saturday morning, a group of keen nature lovers set off from Beacon Hill in the Umtamvuna Reserve. Sections of the reserve had been burned and a crop of fresh wild flowers were just pushing through the sooty burnt grass.

Energetic hikers (front, from left) Christie Toerien, scribe Philippa Makepeace, Uschi Teitsher, Dorothy McIntyre and Maggie Abbott went on an exhilarating hike in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve with Frederick and Harry Teitsher (back, left and right) visiting from Scandinavia.

Coupled with the beautiful sunny day, the 8km hike to Clearwater Café was a delight. The prospects for a spectacular spring flower showing in September are very positive.

Arts and crafts

The ‘South Coast Hand-in-hand’ organisation does great work with intellectually-challenged youngsters. They held a craft morning at the Ramsgate Lions’ clubhouse last Tuesday, which was entirely sponsored by Woolworths. About twenty young people got stuck into making beautiful mosaic bowls and then tucked into delicious eats and refreshments. They all love doing crafts with the group every week.

Resort rallies

The Wild Coast Sun generously treated 100 children from the Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home to a fun-filled day at the Wild Waves Water Park for Mandela Day. The day included lots of fun activities as well as a delicious lunch. ‘Chef de Partie’ Godfrey Setwe and his pastry team baked a huge cake to celebrate Madiba’s centenary, which the children tucked into wholeheartedly.

All news to Philippa.
