Mr Preston told the Herald that Dr de Beer and himself first became acquainted when he moved to the South Coast. “While attending to a patient who needed an ambulance and was battling to find one, we realised that a definite need for a high quality community-based medical service on the South Coast was urgently required,” explained Mr Preston.

Netcare Margate staff love the aero-medical launch. They are (from left) Vanessa Gounden, Rob Ferreira, Paroshini Naidoo and Sarah McKaw.

He mentioned that many hours of effort and dedication led to the launch of Med-Evac Ambulance on July 18, 2005. “It was on Mandela’s birthday and we thought it was significant and befitting, since South Africans were dedicating 67 minutes to the community, that we dedicate 67 years and more to ours.

“So, from humble beginnings of four staff and two vehicles, we have grown to providing employment to over 25 staff and running eight vehicles – including two boats and now one helicopter.”
