The programme, which aims at empowering school teachers and their pupils with excellent English language writing, reading and pronunciation, was introduced to the primary school principals, teachers and senior officials from the Department of Education in KZN during the workshop held at the Ugu Office of the KZN Department of Education on Monday and Tuesday this week.
Ms George introduced the attendees to the Jolly Phonics Programme, which is being piloted in this region and is set to be rolled out to the whole KZN province.
“The methodology Jolly Phonics came in 30 years ago and was used as the best way to teach children English. The youngsters learnt sound and how to pronounce complex English words. In England it’s compulsory to teach, write and read in phonics language. I am pleased to teach these teachers this language to benefit their pupils at primary schools,” said Ms George.

Deborah Conlon, Director of Iselwa Impacting Lives, working with the chairman of Izingolwe Research Task Force’s clinical psychologist specialist, researcher and child development specialist Dr Pieter Kitshoff, said that they will assist six experimental schools and six control schools with learning materials and with innovative and educational solutions to benefit the pupils. “This project will be implemented in KZN and Eastern Cape where there are challenges and shocking schools results. We will use it in primary schools and high schools,” said Ms Conlon.
Muza Primary School principal, Jabulani Hlophe, said they welcomed the programme and are happy with it. “We believe it will assist us and our pupils.”
His sentiments were echoed by HOD of Magaye Primary, Busisiwe Mbili, who said they were pleased to be part of this UK programme. “We are still learning about the programme but we are happy that we have been selected to take part in it,” she said.
