Working together to tidy up Tweni

Work has also started on rebuilding the steps at Tweni beachfront with bricks, after a mysterious fire last month burnt down the railings and steps to the beach. So watch this space!

After a recent meeting between Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s municipal manager, Max Mbili, and concerned residents in Umtentweni, the staff at Community Services Depot 1 this week organised a clean-up of dumping hot spots in the area.

The cameras all over Tweni are gradually being replaced with HD cameras that can pick up number plates and protection services have given assurances that footage will be used in prosecuting offenders who dump illegally.

“Illegal dumping is common all over the South Coast. We are currently looking at options with RNM of locating an area where people can take garden refuse, recycling, household refuse, small amounts of building material, old televisions etc near Tweni rather than take it to Oatlands Landfill at Margate,” said Mike Davies, secretary of the Tweni Residents’ Association.

RNM staff have also painted the curb stones at the Umtentweni intersection. Praise must be given to staff from RNM and to Councillor Leon Garbade who helped to organise this project.

Further hard work has been taking place at the intersection’s garden, thanks to Calvin Fourie of Muddy Boots Nursery and Lee Barker of Jaxx Restaurant who has helped with some costs.
