SOUTHBROOM Tennis Club staged a successful and enjoyable Sunday Funday Tiago Round Robin last Sunday.

Although it was a fun event, the emphasis was on bringing together the regular Wednesday and Saturday club members and the Sunday more social members and players.

The idea was also to mix the players to improve the standard of play and to boost the confidence and self-esteem of those who sometimes feel sidelined, according to Pippa Bromley-Gans, the club captain, who organised the event with the help of club committee member, Ron Stirling.

“I had some sleepless night, trying to make sure that everybody got a look in,” she said. “We paired our more regular players with the social players and the odd visitor.”

Club chairmann Rolf Gudegast and the runners-up, Stella Wilkinson and Christian Kruger.

She said there were nine couples in all, so two teams, the Tiago Flames and the Tiago Grillers, with four couples per team.

Each couple played eight games per match, which ended up with everybody playing 32 games. The ninth couple played in both teams.

“The Grillers were the outright winners of the team event, and the winning couple, with the highest number of games, was Nigel Eeles and Cornelia Steenkamp, and the runners-up were Christian Kruger and Stella Wilkinson,” Pippa said.

She added that it was really nice to see new faces receiving recognition.

There was a good turnout of spectators, which added tremendously to the success of the event, which was followed by a braai lunch and salads.

A few stalwarts stayed on and continued to play long into the afternoon.

“It was really a great event, and everyone said ‘what a fun day. When is the next?’

“Well, there will be a Christmas Round Robin on Sunday December 9, so everyone must start getting prepared,” Pippa said.
