UPDATE: Shane Jordaan sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment for child pornography
He had been found in possession of 5 176 images depicting child abuse in a sexual light as well as 142 videos.
‘GO with God, keep your faith,’ were the words uttered by Marion Jordaan as her grandson, Shane Jordaan, was escorted down into the holding cells beneath the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court after sentencing on Monday morning, December 10.
Magistrate Ambrose Mfayela sentenced Jordaan to 10 years’ imprisonment, with three years suspended for five years. The charges faced by Jordaan were for the distribution of film sexual content.
He had been found in possession of 5 176 images depicting child abuse in a sexual light as well as 142 videos.
It had previously been heard in court that the images depicted torture.

This brings to a close the case which has been in and out of court since Jordaan was first arrested in September 2015.
Prior to sentencing, state appointed attorney Paul Ramasar presented a response to mitigating factors offered by state prosecutor, Charlie du Plessis in an earlier court appearance.
Various health-related matters, both physical and mental were again highlighted by the defence.
Mr Ramasar also offered that there was no indication that the public wanted Jordaan imprisoned as there had been ‘no public outcry’. He also argued that Jordaan posed no threat to society.
He added that the victims depicted in the images had been imaginary, and that the state had not provided the original source images.

Handing down judgement, Magistrate Mfayela said the court viewed Jordaan as an adult mentally and emotionally, and not as a 12 to 13-year-old as previously suggested by a psychologist who had interviewed him.
He also pointed out that that Westville Medium B Prison had 110 beds available and also offered medical care. As Jordaan had medical aid, he would also be able to receive specialist care.
Moments before he was led down into the holding cells, Jordaan shared an embrace with his grandmother as they both fought back tears.
Jordaan’s grandmother encouraged him to smile for photographers as he was led away.
