Students do Hindi school proud

Leena Goberdan from Marburg took second place in the country.

A local Hindi school’s newly formed Hindu cultural group, Marburg Paatshalaa, held its first thanksgiving and awards ceremony recently.

The group of 11 students started the Hindi school earlier this year, teaching adults and young people to speak, read and write in Hindi. In a short time, the school has produced sterling results with one of its students, Leena Goberdan from Marburg, taking the second place in the country.

The school is affiliated to the Hindi Shiksha Sangh and is recognised nationally. The teacher behind the school’s success is Guru Sunkar Rabbie Rampersadh.

All 11 students graduated recently at a special thanksgiving and hawan (prayer ceremony) held at Arya Samaj Hall where students received their certificates.

Guest speaker Rajesh Latchman from the Durban Hindi Shiksah Sangh said he was impressed with the number of students that wrote the exam and with the bhajans sung by Guru Rabbie.

Classes are held at the Sai Centre, Marburg. Those wanting to join the school can do so by January 9 when the new school year commences.

Proud to be part of the Hindi school, Marburg Paatshalaa are (from left) Rakesh Latchman, Guru Sunkar Rabbie Rampersadh, Mewa Goberdan, Jamunapursad Ramlall, Pamela Maharaj, Neirmalah Gyan T, Aishnee Gyan, Anitha Bechoo, Lena Goberdan, Seetha Sukai, Parath Sukai, Jerry Rupu and Rabikumar Sewpursadh. According to Mewa Goberdan the school is not restricted to just the Hindi speaking community and is open to all.
