Mommy Cat’s incredible journey

It took the determined feline about two weeks to make its way back to the Herald's offices.

The South Coast Herald has it’s very own ‘incredible journey’ tale to tell.

‘Mommy Cat’ and two other feral felines have been a fixture at the Herald offices for some time, and between them have produced several litters of kittens.

With the welfare of the cats at heart, plans were made to trap the felines and have them sterilised by the state vet.

The cats were nabbed and taken to Harmony Hill Rescue in Sea Park, a distance of some 10 kilometres, depending on which route is taken, from the Herald’s office.

And while she didn’t travel nearly as far as the 400 kilometres covered by Luath the Labrador retriever, Bodger the bull terrier, and Tao the Siamese cat in Sheila Burnford’s novel, ‘The Incredible Journey’ “Mommy Cat’ still managed a fair distance in her determination to return ‘home’.

Just a few days after being delivered to the shelter, she managed to escape from her enclosure and set off on a two-week journey back to the Herald offices.

Herald staff was stunned to see ‘Mommy Cat’ back in her usual spot. The fearless feline must have ventured through sugarcane fields, crossed main roads and bridges, and dodged vehicles and people to make her way back.

Perhaps she was looking for her kittens which, happily, were all safely rehomed before she was trapped.

Interestingly, some scientists believe that cats may have a homing ability similar to that of pigeons, which helps them to find their way back home.
