Devotees take part in Kavady festival in Park Rynie

There are various reasons for carrying the Kavady but one of many reasons is to give thanks to Lord Muruga.

Kavady is one of the biggest festivals on the South Indian calendar.

The word ‘Kavady’ is a Tamil word meaning flattened pole with loads attached to each end.

The Kavady carried in a religious procession also has a pole with a semi-circular arch.

The loads attached to the ends of the pole are brass vessels filled with milk or other offerings.

There are various reasons for carrying the Kavady but the two main reasons are to give thanks to Lord Muruga or to ask Him for help in overcoming a particular problem.

Preshaan Ishwarlal and Saisha Varden are seen with one of the beautifully adorned chariots at Park Rynie beach ready for the Kavady.
