Narrow escape for police dog Dexter
The stolen goods, including the vehicle, were recovered.
It was a close call for K9 police dog Dexter in Paddock last Thursday when a man suspected of robbing a house in Margate attempted to stab the dog.
Margate police had responded to a robbery in Lavenski Drive where two armed men had gained access to a property under false pretenses and threatened the 58-year-old resident.

“The men demanded the safe keys from the resident before fleeing with cash, cellphones, a flat-screen TV, a laptop and a vehicle,” said police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane.
Later that day, the police K9 unit spotted the stolen vehicle near Paddock.
They attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped off. The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.
One of the men fled into the bush, chased by police officers and police dog Dexter.
When officers approached, the suspect drew a knife and attempted to stab Dexter while threatening the officers.
One of the police officers fired a shot, wounding the suspect in his leg. He was arrested.
The stolen goods, including the vehicle, were recovered and a firearm was seized.
The 28-year-old man is under police guard in hospital.
A second suspect is still at large but an arrest is expected soon.
