PORT Edward mourns the untimely death of well-known resident, Denham McClure (72), who died whilst undergoing heart surgery on January 16. He had had a triple bypass last year. He and his family settled in Port Edward in 1978. Denham was a successful farmer and an accomplished golfer – he was the current chairman of the Port Edward Country Club.

He was an excellent father to Paul, Natalie and Bugs and the late Christopher and leaves behind his wife Ruth and four grandchildren. With his friendly smile and willingness to help others, he will be sorely missed. His wake is being held at the Port Edward Country Club today (23rd) at 3pm.
Down under
Priscilla (Cilla) Peel of Port Edward recently returned from a fabulous five-week holiday to Floreat (near Perth), Western Australia. She visited her daughter Penelope Melis and family for a ‘family re-connection’ holiday as Cilla hasn’t seen them for three years. It was enjoyable time spent with her grandchildren Tayla (9) and Blake (6). The family went on a ‘tree-top’ adventure and saw kangaroo and koala bears. Later they enjoyed a visit to King’s Park and the botanical gardens overlooking Perth.
Up the ‘Berg
Ten local hikers had a fantastic ‘mountain getaway’ in the Northern Drakensberg recently. They spent four days at Sungubala Eco Camp which uses only solar power and mountain stream water. Days were filled with fun activities like walking and swimming and evenings were spent around a roaring fire. One evening the group visited the nearby roost of Amur falcons – little raptors that are the size of pigeons and migrate between South Africa (in the same tree!) and the Amur Valley in Russia. It was an amazing sight to see hundreds of birds circling the tree at dusk and then dropping as if by silent command into the branches of ‘their’ tree. For the first few minutes, the birds chatter excitedly and then there is absolute silence until dawn.
