Man who tried to save girl who fell from balcony dies

Frederik suffered a broken hip and a fractured spine in the fall.

Frederik Carel Labuschagne (22) the man believed to have fallen off a balcony at a block of flats in Garrick Avenue in Manaba while trying to save eight-year-old Bronwyn Eloff on Saturday, December 22, died yesterday (Thursday).

Frederik suffered a broken hip and a fractured spine in the fall.

He moved back to Empangeni on the north coast where he underwent a second operation on Wednesday this week. He died the following day.

Bronwyn Eloff (8), a pupil at Suid-Natal Primary, died after falling three storeys from a block of flats in Manaba.

Frederik had lived in Margate for about five years, working as a freelance mechanic.

Speaking to the Herald, Frederik’s family described him as a friendly, outgoing and helpful person who loved swimming at the beach, playing with children and a very happy man who got on with everyone.

The family are expected to learn the cause of death later today (Friday).
