If you have inherited a firearm, you need to do the following:

  • Seek advice from the designated firearm officer at your nearest police station.
  • Apply for a new firearm licence in terms of the Firearm Controls Act, Act No. 60 of 2000.

This entails obtaining a competency certificate from an accredited agent, a background check by the South African Police Service and the compliance with gun safe regulations.

OR

  • Hand over the firearm(s) to a firearm dealer.
  • Hand over the firearm(s) to your local police for destruction.

“You may only take possession of a firearm once the licence for that particular firearm has been issued,” said Port Shepstone Saps Ugu Cluster communications officer, Captain Petros Mpinge.
