Parents, beware of these cellphone apps

Although most platforms and apps do have built-in security features to protect the safety of the user some of them can be dangerous, especially for younger people.

WITH an ever-expanding list of social media platforms and apps, parents now more than ever need to become familiar with what their children have installed on their cell phones.

Although most platforms and apps do have built-in security features to protect the safety of the user some of them can be dangerous. ‘Bumble’ is one such app.

Similar in its design to Tinder, a popular online dating app which was designed to help singles meet other like-minded people in their area, Bumble requires women to make the first move. It has been claimed by some users that people are signing up using false information.

‘Snapchat’ often makes the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Users of this app have violated the privacy of others by taking screenshots and by sharing these online. In some cases, this has even resulted in images depicting nudity being shared after the user has been approached through a fake account. The app also allows for online location sharing.

‘Hot or Not’, is an app used widely for the purpose of ‘hooking up’. According to Wikipedia, the app is defined as a rating site that allows users to rate the attractiveness of photos submitted voluntarily by others.

The site offers a matchmaking engine called ‘Meet Me’ and an extended profile feature called ‘Hotlists’.

Another app gaining popularity amongst younger smartphone owners is ‘Calculator’. The app’s icon appears and is labelled as a calculator however, it is, in fact, a storage app used to hide other applications, images, videos, files and even browser history.

Other cellphone apps which should raise questions if your child has them on their smartphone include, Kik, LiveMe, Holla, Whisper, Ask.FM, Omegle, Burn Book, Yellow and Wishbone.
