Illegal dumping at depot 2 raises a stink in Albersville
Debris includes road rubble, construction rubble and black bags.
Not only are Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) staff contravening municipal dumping by-laws, they are also putting people’s health at risk, say those living in the NPC flats in Albersville.
According to residents, the illegal dumping, allegedly by municipal workers at the municipality’s depot 2 opposite the flats, started sometime late last year and the resultant stench has become unbearable.

Chairman of the board of trustees, Nombuso Mathobela told the Herald that they had on numerous occasions asked the municipality to help them clear the area, with no results.
Debris includes road rubble, construction rubble and black bags. “We can hardly open our windows because of the stench and flies. I thought the municipality was meant to enforce by-laws, not break them,” she said.

Hans Latt of Glen Smit Property Administration, managing agents on behalf of the body corporate, said in an email that this area had also become an eyesore which may have ‘a material negative effect’ on the value of the properties.

According to Mr Latt, the matter was reported by the chairman in January and again at the beginning of February but no response had been received from the municipality.
“The municipality notes with concerns the issues highlighted and indeed this is not supposed to happen or to be like that,” said RNM spokesman, Simon April.

“This has since been reported to the relevant heads of department and one can confirm that the community services portfolio committee, which has the majority of employees stationed in that depot, will be conducting a site inspection to assess the issues raised and hopefully present to management of the department the required interventions.”
