Lions’ Show 2019 cancelled

If the economy improves and if there is a big enough commitment by local businesses, the event could possibly take place again in 2020.

The annual Port Shepstone Lions’ Show has been cancelled this year due largely in part to the poor state of the economy.

The trade show has been running for 34 consecutive years, and this is the first time it has been cancelled.

Denis Meyer, public relations director of the Lions Club of Port Shepstone, explained that the Lions’ Show is a trade and entertainment expo which relies heavily on public support for both the exhibitors and the entertainment provided.

“Support, particularly from the local community has dwindled during the past couple of years. The event also now has to compete with too many other events organised for the winter school holidays making it virtually impossible to generate the support enjoyed in previous years”.

He said R1,2 million was spent on entertainment and infrastructure prior to the opening of the 2018 show.

The net profit generated from the event was less than R100 000.

“Many months of preparation and long hours are devoted both prior to and during the event by Lions volunteers.

“These volunteers give freely of their time and means and at tremendous personal cost in order to raise funds for Lions charities.

“This profit margin currently does not justify the amount of effort committed to the project. It has also become increasingly difficult to sell stands to exhibitors/stall holders and costs related to infrastructure and entertainment have soared. Sponsorships are also becoming increasingly difficult to secure owing to the poor economy.”

Will the Lions be considering a show for 2020?

Lion Denis said that if the economy improves and if there is a big enough commitment by local businesses through participation and sponsorships, the event could possibly take place again in 2020.
