Devastating effect of addiction reflected at rehab centre
Many of the recovering addicts had to hit rock bottom before they realised they needed help.
Joanne’s Angels visited the Amcap Rehab last week and members of the angels said that it is always a big eye-opener for them.
One of the speakers at the rehab was a recovering addict himself and explained that he had a normal upbringing but that somehow, it just wasn’t enough and according to him, it all started with alcohol.

He said in order to feed their habits, many addicts would steal from their family or friends. Close friends and family suffer the most and many of the recovering addicts had to hit rock bottom before they realised they needed help – a moment in an addicts life when it’s almost too late.
“Many addicts end up in some form of rehab and receive help and learn to function normally again, others are not so lucky,’ said Joanne Venter of Joanne’s Angels.
Joanne said she was concerned with the large number of younger males in rehab and that parents are not picking up on their child’s habit. According to her, there are no tell-tale signs until the child’s behaviour starts changing drastically and things around the house start going missing.
“What we would like to tell people in our community is that drug and alcohol abuse is prevalent all around us and it’s ruining people’s lives. Most people that have dealt with it will know what I am talking about and just how devastating it is for all involved,” she said.
Joanne further advised parents and caregivers to monitor their child’s behaviour as addiction can affect anyone, at any age.
She added that Joanne’s Angels had donated some towels and snacks to the people in recovery and that they had in return learned a lot from the recovering addicts.
She would like to thank everyone who aided them with donations. Should you like to contribute or become involved in Joanne’s Angels contact Joanne at 082-3377330 or 039-9760246. While towels go a long way some people in need require a lot more in order to rebuild their lives. Any old or no longer needed clothing can also be donated.
