IMPORTANT: ‘Stop and go’ to be implemented temporarily along Scottburgh’s R102
This is to allow rumble strips to be installed on the road.

SCOTTBURGH locals have been left fuming after a notice put up in town started trending on local social media groups within the community.

Initially, the notice posted by Natia Construction’s site agent, Ndokweni Siyabonga, claims that the R102 between Scottburgh Mall and George Crookes Street (the road to the Blue Marlin Hotel) will be closed for nine days, due to the continued construction of the pedestrian bridge which has been ongoing for two years. The project completion date was initially given as December 2017.
However, a further notice and apology was published on a local Scottburgh Facebook page, informing that there has been a misunderstanding.
According to the Chief Legal Officer of Natia Construction, Miss, N Ndlovu, there will only be a temporary disruption in the flow of traffic from 26 to 29 March.
The upcoming temporary stop and go disruption is to allow rumble strips to be installed on the road. Rumble strips are a series of raised strips across a road or along its verge, warning drivers of speed restrictions.
Two lanes will be closed during this period, leaving only one lane open to motorists.
Locals are however questioning whether any thought had been given to the timing of the road closure due to the influx of holidaymakers in the area and the impact of traffic on Scottburgh’s CBD.
They noted that it would have been a wise decision for Natia Construction to provide a map outlining alternative routes for holidaymakers.
Shara Singh, Scottburgh ward councillor said the project falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport and not Umdoni Municipality. “The scaffolding and beams will be placed during the period from March 21 to March 30. There will be further road closures in the future when they pour the concrete but these will only be for a day,” said Cllr Singh.
However, in the same updated notice, it now seems that the full closure of the road will only be announced at a later date.
This closure will be done so that the main beam of the bridge can be constructed.
The current estimated date for completion for the pedestrian bridge is June this year.
