Former magistrate speaks on legalities of cannabis at Stonecroft meeting
Cannabis may be grown and consumed in private for your own use.
Port Shepstone Country Club hall was bustling with a host of young and old at the Stonecroft Ministries monthly meeting held recently. All were eager to hear a talk by former regional magistrate Johann Bester on the law and cannabis.
“The law, like all things, goes through a series of changes as the challenges of society call for a shift of paradigm and a re-examination of a past law. Unlike the ten commandments, the law is not cast in stone. Through the decade’s South African law has at times become severe and at other times relaxed and the law pertaining to the growing and consumption of cannabis is no exception,” explained Mr Bester.

He said cannabis contains mainly two substances, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is activated into a mind-altering substance when heated. The other element, Cannabidiol (CBD) is innocuous and possibly possessed healing qualities. THC is psychoactive and gives one the ‘high’ when smoked or consumed.
Cannabis may be grown and consumed in private for your own use. You may not share, nor sell your cannabis as you will be prosecuted if caught doing so. Cannabis is still illegal for children under the age of eighteen.
Jonathan Brauteseth provided music which soothed the soul. His rendition of the Bob Dylan song ‘He touched Me’ set the tone for the second speaker, John Pretorius, who took everyone on a journey on his personal encounter with God. He said that it is never too late to have your life turned around for the better. “We may not see the good in a fellow human being but thank goodness God does. Many have been called to service from a group society would prefer to ignore and give up on as lost people,” said Mr Pretorius.

Stonecroft Ministries next meeting takes place at the Port Shepstone Country Club on Friday, April 12 at 9am for 9.30am. The cost is R30 per person. The manager of Ikhayalethu Home of Love and Care will be speaking on the challenges and needs of children with special needs and disabilities that they care for.

If the public would like to donate educational toys, clothing and dry foods for this home, please contact Stonecroft committee member Antoinette at 073 9075086. Andy Du Casse will be the second guest speaker with Nadia Engelbrecht and Sue Neilson providing music. Booking is essential. Contact Hannetjie on 039 6951838 or Vanessa on 082 8181449.
