Small claims court claim amount to increase

As from April 1, the Small Claims Court will increase its maximum claim amount from R15 000 to R20 000.

Charmaine Schwenn, director of Durban-based law firm Schwenn Inc. sits as Small Claims Court Commissioner for the Durban District, providing access to justice to those who cannot afford the court process on a pro bono basis.

“This increase in jurisdiction (claim amount) brings an exciting development to access to justice of all South Africans and will allow more people to institute their claims in a quicker, easier and affordable way.”
