Looking back on South Coast history, 1991 to 2000: April 9 to 15
The week started well but the undercurrent of violence and abuse was still coming to the surface at times.
Courage and teamwork saved the day for the visitors.
April 9
1993
“A husband and wife from Durban who were swept out to sea at Hibberdene main beach were rescued by six young surfers last Saturday.”
And more teamwork was going to be needed to get to the truth. “A R50 000 reward has been offered by the Commissioner of Police for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the killers who massacred 10 people in Murchison on Monday this week.”
1999
There was good news for a much-loved landmark. “Spoornet has decided to shelve the Alfred County Railway debt for 12 months, thus giving the Port Shepstone to Harding railway a new lease on life.”

April 10
1998
There was a strange tale of how far a man might go to show his love. “A male escort who allegedly stole a crocodile suddenly took ill and was unable to appear in court last Friday.”
And horrific stories of child neglect and abuse… “Abandoned children have nowhere to go.”
And… “Newborn baby flung into palm tree.”
April 12
1996
Violence still simmered… “Four people, two women, a man and a four-year-old boy, were killed by a gang of armed men in two separate incidents in Izingolweni.”
But, in one respect, the South Coast proved safer than elsewhere. “While death was stalking the roads of the rest of the country over the Easter weekend, there were no deaths on the Lower South Coast roads.”
April 14
1995
“Chiefs blamed for poor local voter registration.”
