Child drowns in river crossing

A mother was crossing the river while carrying her children, aged 14 months and three years respectively, when tragedy struck.

A TODDLER (14 months) drowned in the Umkomazi river on Tuesday morning this week.

Paramedics from KZN EMS, Metro police search and rescue unit members, policemen and fire fighters responded to the scene.

“Reports are that a mother was crossing the river while carrying her children, aged 14 months and three years respectively, when she slipped into the water,” said Robert McKenzie of KZN EMS.

The woman immediately called out for assistance and community members, sisters from the nearby Banyeni Clinic and a minibus driver responded.

The three were retrieved from the water and take to the Banyeni Clinic.

The 14-month-old was declared dead. Her sister was treated at the clinic by staff and paramedics before being airlifted to hospital  by the Department of Health’s air ambulance. Her condition was described as ‘serious’.
