Mail journo takes a bite of the ‘Big Apple’
If you do plan on making a trip to New York, be sure to leave all your expectations behind.

MAIL journalist Juan Venter has officially reported back for duty after a month-long trip to New York City in the United States.
Seeing a part of the world most people would joke about trading a kidney for, Juan said it certainly was an experience he’ll remember forever. From the vastly diverse range of cultures to the downright strangest and unique people all squeezed into one big city. “Things aren’t as big as they appear on the television though,” Juan says.

“For one, no offence to the grand old lady, but the Statue of Liberty isn’t as big as you would think – all in all though, it’s still a sight to see. Another thing that was cool to experience was the view from atop the Empire State Building but, if you do plan on making the trip up to the 67th floor, be sure to wear something warm, especially during winter.”

Juan further added that it was a ‘culinary experience’ of sorts but not in the way you would think. “Don’t think you’ll get what you ask for when asking for chips or tomato sauce. I did and ended up with a packet of potato chips and tomato puree. I only later figured out the appropriate reference is ketchup and fries.”
As for getting around the city itself, Juan says that the ‘pedestrian is king’.
“You can cross the road just about anywhere without fear of getting hit by a car. Motorists actually stop at intersections. And there’s really no need for things like Uber. You can really walk just about anywhere as long as you don’t don a red shirt with anti-President Trump slogans as Democrat supporters will walk up straight to your face to read it and make sure it’s not something supportive of the country’s president,” he laughs.

If you do plan on making a trip to the ‘Big Apple’ as its famously called, be sure to leave all of your expectations behind Juan added, explaining that there’ll be moments when you don’t know whether you should laugh out loud or just mind your own business.
