Super-speller Krithika Devnarain does Umzintovale proud

She was also invited to compete at a big spelling bee competition in Dubai, but declined for personal reasons, citing the need to focus on her studies as she is now a high school pupil.

Grade 8 pupil, Krithika Devnarain was selected to take part in the third African Spelling Bee Championship in Kenya last year when she was still a pupil at Umzintovale Primary.

Team South Africa headed to Kenya towards the end of last year, and even though the competition was a tough one, competitors held their heads high and did their schools proud.

Top team honours went to Team Nigeria.

Krithika did exceptionally well, progressing all the way to the final rounds and managed to finish a remarkable fourth in the junior division.

Her former Umzintovale Primary teacher, Monica Sunker who has guided her throughout her spelling bee journey from day one, presented Krithika with her fourth place award at the school’s prize-giving ceremony last year.

In addition, Krithika and Mrs Sunker were invited to the Umdoni Circuit Awards presentation at the House of the Rising Sun in Park Rynie last Friday, May 10.
