ANC Lower South Coast Region spokesman Lindo Mzimela said the ANC in the region will now focus on issues raised by communities during the election period.

“We are humbled by the support we received from voters in the Ugu District and we want to thank all parties for their participation in strengthening our democracy.”

Parliamentary representation is as follows:

* ANC – with just over 10 million votes, the party secured 230 seats, a drop of 19.

* DA – having won 89 seats in 2014, the party has now secured 84 seats, a drop of five.

* EFF – almost doubled its presence, upping its seats from 25 to 44 after netting 1.8 million votes.

* IFP – also saw a gain, increasing its seats from 10 to 14.

* VF Plus – increased from four to 10 seats.

* ACDP – four seats.

* UDM – three seats.

* Newcomers GOOD and ATM each received two seats.

The NFP, AIC and COPE will all remain in parliament after each garnering two seats, while the PAC and AL JAMA will each have one.

Twenty people were arrested on charges of electoral fraud for attempting to vote more than once.

One of these was a man from the Sawoti area.

SAPS spokesman for the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the arrests were an indication that security features employed by the Independent Electoral Commission to prevent double voting was effective.

IEC spokesman Siphiwe Yeni said IEC staff were trained to handle the election processes, although there were challenges.

Mr Yeni said however that these challenges did not interfere with the outcome of the election.
