PSHS pupils excel at Olympiad

The examination was three hours long and all pupils displayed an enormous amount of commitment and determination.

Port Shepstone High is extremely proud of 14 senior pupils who shone at the annual De Beers English Olympiad. They managed to garner three gold, five silver, three bronze and three merit awards respectively. Lethokhuhle Khumalo has been invited to attend the prestigious award’s ceremony in Makhanda (Grahamstown) this year after placing in the top five of the First Additional Language (FAL) category.

This competition that draws over 8 000 entries each year from around South Africa and its neighbouring countries. It has grown into a formidable contest where the top three candidates receive substantial monetary prizes, starting from R33 000 for first place. It inspires critical thinking and creative writing amongst first and second language English speakers, and prompts a deeper appreciation of literature by encouraging a greater understanding of the written word.

The school congratulates subject head of the Life Orientation department and much-appreciated school counsellor Debbie King for obtaining an honours degree in psychology recently.
