Earlier that day, traffic officer Johnson Mlambi was en route to Hibberdene, travelling behind a taxi and a truck on Oscar Borchers Road in Marburg

when the car came speeding past him, overtaking the taxi and the truck on a double barrier line.

“I gave chase onto Sugar Mill Road towards Batstone’s Drift.” said Officer Mlambi. “The driver was very recklessly overtaking vehicles, and I lost sight of him before the low level bridge.

“I thought he was heading towards Louisiana but when I got to the Louisiana intersection, a taxi driver stopped me and told me the car had crashed at the low level bridge.”

When Officer Mlambi arrived at the bridge he found the vehicle abandoned.

Police were called and the vehicle was recovered and taken to the Road Traffic Inspectorate pound in Oslo Beach.

On Tuesday this week the owner contacted police and it was established that the vehicle had been taken by the owner’s 15-year-old son without her permission.

The owner was handed a R6 000 fine for the traffic violations committed by the underage driver.
