Fidler in the Hood: Moonlight becomes you, so enjoy yourself

The sea was glistening, the moon was up and it was the perfect setting for a perfect evening's Moondeckers get-together.

HOLIDAY greetings, one and all. The vacation season is here and signs are looking good, with quite a number of up country registered cars to be seen. For many, the Hibiscus Coast still remains a favourite place to visit. The weather is holding up, too, so, enjoy. There’s a whole lot of living to do, if you are up for it. Remember, time waits for no one, so enjoy what our Hibiscus Coast has to offer. On with the show.

Great get-together

The monthly Moondeckers get-together hosted by Ramsgate Conservancy on Monday evening was a fabulous success, even if it was perishingly cold. A great crowd attended and this time the ‘Old Devil Moon’ did us proud. No clouds, just a super silvery moon to delight worshippers.

Generally, there has been a fair amount of cloud in the sky to inhibit lunar light, but on Monday night the sea was glistening, the moon was up and it was the perfect setting for a perfect evening’s get-together. David Hallé was in fine form, extolling the virtues of conservancy work and calling for volunteers, but he did take time out to thank the Herald for supporting the Moondeckers.

It’s a given that there’s always an interesting person to meet, even as passing strangers. Helen Thompson and Deseré Bouillon shared our table and after initial introductions, new friends were made. Helen said she was born and bred in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands and your scribe immediately mentioned knowing another South Coaster from Port Stanley and Helen responded ‘Kay Taylor, married to Mick, who died a couple of years back. My cousin was a bridesmaid at their wedding in Port Stanley.’ Small world, isn’t it?

New pastures

With reference to passing strangers, it seems Helen will be in that category, as she leaves South Africa in a couple of weeks after 25 years to re-join her family in England. Helen will settle down in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and admits she’s dreading the cold and wet of North Yorkshire dales. Look on the bright side, Helen, there’s a lot of sheep farmers in Yorkshire looking for someone to love. She smiled ‘Very funny: me coming from the Falkland Islands and the sheep there. I don’t think I’ll bother, thank you.’ So much for matchmaking!

Diaries needed

The number of social activities on offer down here never ceases to surprise. A diary is a necessity, or, maybe employing a social secretary. Whether it’s the monthly Moondeckers ‘by the light of the silvery moon’ get-together, the monthly Ramsgate Lions quiz night or the SHAFTS social events.

Even Liz Curran’s regular showbiz concerts at the Margate Retirement Village are special events.

Grandparents: Get set

One really special event is on the near horizon, and duty calls for all those grandparents who are thinking of, or will be taking part in the 35th annual Grandparents’ Walk next month. Diarise Wednesday, July 3. The good news is that the sun will be riding high – registration is from 7.30am, and the walk-don’t-run event gets underway at 8am.

More good news is that, subject to a troubling ingrown toenail healing by the day, and, subject to a late fitness test, yours truly will be there to cover the event! By the way, are there any grandchildren to ‘borrow’ for an hour, please? They will be returned as soon as the event is over, promise.

Breakfast will also be an added incentive to go the distance – all for R20. Who could ask for anything more? For further details, please give Kitty Steenmans a call at 082 2543886. Stalwart Rotary Ann Kitty has all the answers and is a key organiser of the annual event.

See the show

Liz and her entertainment committee at the Village will present yet another production this coming Saturday evening, June 22. The show is called ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ – not to be confused with Liz’s other number entitled ‘Driving Rob Fidler Crazy’.

The show has nothing to do with the movie starring Jessica Tandy either, but is a collection of popular music of the day on the road, when Chevrolets, VW Beetles, and drive-in movies were in vogue and when you all had a twinkle in your eye. Doors open at 6 and the show starts at 7pm. Bring along a feast, plus whatever tipple you fancy and round up the usual suspects to reserve a table.

You have to hand it to Ms Curran bun. Indefatigable and enthusiasm personified, Liz seems to be always on the go and is already talking about the next show at the end of July. It will feature Evan Roberts on piano, playing the Great American Songbook with singers Samantha Landers and Anthony Downing.

There will also be a guest appearance by former KZN Symphony Orchestra member Nina Sugden-Watson on cello, so come along and meet Miss Daisy – sounds like fun.

See you, Rob.
