Community hall still in a sorry state
The hall, which was opened nine years ago, was beset with problems even before completion.
Upset Margate residents want Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) to step in and fix their crumbling community hall.
The once state-of-the-art hall’s roof caved in in November last year.

At the time, RNM spokesman Simon April had said repairs would commence as soon as the insurance company had processed the claim, but eight months later there has been no progress.
Mr April refuted claims that the municipality’s insurance claim had been rejected based on poor workmanship and faulty design, saying the delay was caused by a request by the insurance company for additional documentation.
The hall, which was opened nine years ago, was beset with problems even before completion.
A builder had reportedly abandoned the project after having had difficulties with the roof installation.
Another contractor was then appointed to complete the roofing.
Residents said the hall had become an eyesore as the lack of repairs had caused the structure to deteriorate even further in the interim.
One, Maureen Willemse, claimed taxpayers’ money was being wasted on novice contractors who cut costs and did shoddy work.
“This hall is a prime example. All we want is for RNM to fix it because our properties are right next door. It’s not a pleasant sight and we don’t want it to turn into a haven for criminals.”
On Tuesday this week, Mr April commented, saying, “The municipality submitted a claim to the insurers and processing of the claim has been delayed. However means to have the claim finalised are in progress.”
