Staff and pupils were delighted to meet Grant (58) last Wednesday.

He will be covering the distance of 4 800km solo, utilising a specially designed kayak for the arduous journey.

Lethokuhle Khumalo excelled at the De Beers English Olympiad recently held in Makhanda, Grahamstown. She attended the prestigious award’s ceremony after placing first in South Africa for the First Additional Language (FAL) category and walked off with prize money, certificates, awards and a bursary to attend her first year at Rhodes University next year.

His aim is to raise awareness of the dire state the oceans are in, particularly with plastic pollution.

Not only was his talk and autograph session a wonderful motivation, it encourages pupils to make a difference in the fight.

Sheppie High pupils Gina Coxen (left) was delighted to achieve a bronze certificate and Nicole Erasmus was over the moon with her silver certificate won at the recent Computer Application Olympiad.

Grant appeals to the South Coast to collect 1.5 million plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, to match the 1.5 million oar strokes required to complete the race.

The bottles can be any size, must be rinsed and the label, plastic ring and cap removed. July is #plasticfreemonth, so help keep plastic waste out of landfills and oceans.
