Raid reaps rewards as police close in

NOTORIOUS areas were targeted as police officers in KwaZulu-Natal conducted numerous operations regarding drug dens to not just arrest drug users, but dealers too.

Between Friday and Sunday last weekend, police raided several of these areas across the province, including Park Rynie, where two suspects were found in possession of large amounts of dagga worth thousands, ready for distribution.

“Various clusters embarked on operations to saturate crime hotspots in a multidisciplinary approach,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

All of the operations combined resulted in the arrests of 77 suspects for dealing in drugs, or for being in the possession of drugs.

Various quantities of drugs were seized, such as heroin, dagga, cocaine, mandrax, whoonga and crack cocaine.

These will all be sent to the Saps forensic science laboratory for further analysis and will be presented as evidence before the courts.

The suspects have since appeared in various courts in the province.

“Whilst clamping down on drugs, police officers also effected 278 arrests for various crimes committed in the province,” added Lt Col Zwane.

These crimes included murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of dangerous weapons, rape, robberies, drunk driving and the selling of alcohol without a permit.

There were also a number of illegal liquor outlets that were shut down.
