Don’t fall for this Captain’s scam

Police point out that only the investigating officer assigned to a case will ever contact a complainant.

THE infamous ‘Captain Khumalo’ is doing the rounds again and police are warning the public to beware of this fraudster’s tricks.

“The bogus Captain reportedly phones people who have opened criminal cases, claiming that he has recovered their stolen vehicle or stock,” said provincial communications officer, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

‘Captain Khumalo’ then asks his victim to deposit cash into various bank accounts, promising that the stolen items will be returned as soon as payment is received.

“He is also known to call the relatives of people who have been arrested and promise them he will “speak to prosecutors “and arrange bail if he is paid,” said Colonel Mbele.

Police point out that only the investigating officer assigned to a case will ever contact a complainant.

Colonel Mbele added that complainants will always be asked to present their identity documents at the police station in order to reclaim stolen goods and that no money would need to be paid for this.
