An Izingolweni man, Mthobisi Mkhanya (22) charged with animal cruelty after reportedly beating a puppy and a cat to death before throwing them in a pit latrine, was denied bail in the Izingolweni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week.
The case was postponed for further investigation.

Lower South Coast SPCA inspector Werner Taljaard responded after receiving a report of animal cruelty from a resident in the area.
“When we arrived at the property the police had already arrested Mkhanya, who refused to explain why he had killed the animals,” he said.
Insp Taljaard retrieved the animals from the latrine and took them to the vet for examination.
“The puppy was about four or five months old and a cross-breed female. All the ribs on the right were broken, as were the right back leg and right front leg.
“The cat didn’t have signs of broken bones but displayed signs of suffocation,” said Insp Taljaard.
Police spokesman, Nqobile Gwala said Mkhanya was also charged with intimidating the neighbour who had raised the alarm.
