No more NPS for new vehicles

If your vehicle is already registered and has an NPS number you will not be affected.

Motorists registering their vehicles in Port Shepstone and surrounds will no longer be issued an NPS registration number.

This was one of the topics discussed at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council meeting on Tuesday this week.

Municipal manager, Max Mbili, said the NPS registration numbers had reached their 100 000 limit as, according to regulation 34 of the National Traffic Management Act no.93 of 1996, “a licence mark must not exceed a total of eight characters, inclusive of both alphabet and digits”.

If your vehicle is already registered and has an NPS number you will not be affected.

However, should you purchase a new vehicle or reregister a vehicle from outside the district, you will be issued a number with a new prefix.

Three options were presented for the new plates – NSC (Natal South Coast); NUG (Natal Ugu) and NRN (Natal Ray Nkonyeni).

Council recommended that these be sent to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Bheki Ntuli.

The MEC will be invited to select the new official alternative to NPS.

Mr Mbili added that, once a final decision had been taken, additional information would be made available.
