Joint effort provides relief for elderly Covid-19 patients

Ugu District Portfolio chairman: youth and special programmes, Nomfundo Dlamini stressed the importance of unity and solidarity between communities and government institutions, and thanked the programme coordinators on a job well done.

The KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority, Izingolweni Business Liquor Forum, the South African Police Service, Ugu District Municipality and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality joined forces to hand over food parcels to Ntokozweni Old Age Home, one of the many facilities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reports of the home, which accommodates elderly people who have tested positive for Covid-19, reached the Business Liquor Forum, which swung into action.

“As a forum, we understand the importance of giving back,” said Bongani Cele, chairman of the Izingolweni Business Liquor Forum.

“The liquor industry has been hard hit by the liquor ban, but we remain undeterred in making a positive difference in our communities and the lives of those who have supported us over the years.”

He added that the forum would continue to partner with local institutions and departments in social responsibility programmes and activities aimed at bettering people’s lives, both during and after the pandemic.

“While the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority’s core mandate is to regulate and control the retail sale and micro-manufacturing of liquor in the province, we also have a responsibility to educate and raise awareness on the dangers of excessive/binge drinking, pregnant and underage liquor consumption and the abuse heavily associated with alcohol,” said KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority’s Mbali Msomi,

“During the past year alone, we have supported numerous programmes instituted by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube who has maintained a staunch zero tolerance approach to the illegal sale of alcohol, gender-based violence, safety precautions during the pandemic and any violation of consumer rights. The well-being of our communities is no exception.”

Ugu District Portfolio chairman: youth and special programmes, Nomfundo Dlamini stressed the importance of unity and solidarity between communities and government institutions, and thanked the programme coordinators on a job well done.
