Southcity awards diligent learners

Boys' cricket player of the year and athlete of the year went to Trent Owen.

Southcity Christian School recently celebrated its top achievers for 2020.

Through this very difficult year. the staff expressed how extremely proud they are of all our their pupils, as their dedication and hard work enabled them to complete the whole year’s work.

One parent per family attended the ceremony, where certificates were awarded to each of the Grade R and Grade 1 pupils, followed by the Grade 2 and 3 ceremony, where once again each pupil in those grades was awarded a certificate.

The proceedings concluded with a presentation of the Grade 3 special awards.

Top academic award went to Kal-El Vermeulen while top reader and student of the year award went to Abigail Kreuiter.

Southcity’s senior preparatory dux is Canaan Dinberu.

The sports awards were as follows: Top girl swimmer – Mia Janse van Rensburg; top boy swimmer – Kal-El Vermeulen; most promising hockey player – Lulolonke Zwane; most promising cricketer – Jacques de Bruin.

The senior preparatory phase prize-giving was held last week.

It was an exciting commemoration which included a devotion, prayer and speeches by the Grade 7 leavers.

Special awards were handed out by Mrs Jill Sparrow.

Notable mention is made of certain Grade 7s.

Canaan Dinberu was awarded the Dux trophy while Avuyile Mbebe received the Dux Proxime Accesit.

Michaela Murdoch was presented with the Good Fellowship award.

Ava Anthony was the recipient of a number of awards – the Margate Pharmacy Trophy for Student of the Year, girls’ swimmer of the year, girls’ hockey player of the year, girls’ soccer player of the year, cross-country athlete of the year, as well as – no surprises – the sportsgirl of the year award.

Bayanda Hufner also received a number of awards – boys’ swimmer of the year, rugby player of the year and sports boy of the year.

Boys’ cricket player of the year and athlete of the year went to Trent Owen.

Akhona Tause received the cross-country athlete of the year award.

Caitlin McKinnon was named girl athlete of the year.

Lwandle Sakwe won both the boys’ hockey player of the year and boys’ soccer player of the year awards.
